Dallas is the county seat of Polk County, which was founded on December 22, 1845. Before adopting its present name, the city was known as Cynthia Ann or Cynthian. It was named after Vice President George Mifflin Dallas. This area had its first settlers in 1845 and was incorporated in 1874.
